Abstract
This experiment was to study the effects of oil palm fronds pellet on feed intake and rumen fermentation of lactating dairy cows. Four,Holstein-Friesian cross bred cows were randomly assigned according to a 4x4 Latin Square Design, to received oil palm fronds pellet in concentrate at 0, 25, 50 and 75%, respectively. It was found that concentrate intake, roughage intake, total dry matter intake, ruminal temperature, and ruminal pH were not significantly different among treatment (P<0.05). While, rumen ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N) at 4 hours post feeding was increased when increasing level of oil palm fronds pellet in concentrate, which was highest in cow feed with 75% oil palm fronds pellet in concentrate (P<0.05) .Furthermore, increasing level of oil palm fronds pelletin concentrate resulted in a decrease dry matter intake. In conclusion, level of oil palm fronds pellet in concentrate for lactating dairy cows should not exceed 50%.
